The History of the Breeders’ Futurity G1 Stakes at Keeneland The G1 Breeders’ Futurity is held annually during the Keeneland October Fall Meet.  It is part of the Breeders’ Cup Challenge Series and the winner of this race will automatically be qualified to run in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile.  The race was first held at Keeneland in 1910.  There were a few years 1931-1935 the race was moved to Latonia Race Track in Covingtion, KY and during World War II 1943-1945 the race was held at Churchill Downs in Louisville, KY.    The race has been a graded stakes since 1973 becoming a Grade I in 2004.   The race is 1 1/16mile on the polytrack currently but this was not always the case.  It was always held on a dirt track until Keeneland changed its surface in 2006.  From 1898-1949 the race was six furlongs, 1950-1955 seven furlongs, 1956-1980 seven furlongs 184 feet, and finally switched to 1 1/16miles in 1981-present.

Dixiana began its sponsorship in 2009 and will sponsor the race again in 2012.  One of Dixiana’s most famous race horses, Mata Hari, won this race in 1933!  She will have a stake on this year’s card named in her honor.

Here is some Wikipedia information on this race.

There have been some great writeups in the past few days that you may find interesting.

Full Field of Potential Two Year Old Stars On Display in Breeders' Futurity
By Ellis Starr - National Racing Analyst for Equibase

Keeneland's opening weekend program is being promoted as "Fall Stars Weekend," which certainly applies when looking at the field for the 99th running of the Grade 1, $400,000 Dixiana Breeders' Futurity. With 16 entered and 14 likely to run and with an automatic entry in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile (in four weeks) on the line, many of these well-bred and talented freshmen could be stars in short order. Eight of the 14 entrants in the race have won or placed in stakes races in their most recent starts, that group led by Grade 2 With Anticipation Stakes winner Balance the Books and runner-up Joha, both running over the synthetic Polytrack surface for the first time after running on grass. Grade 2 Summer Stakes runner-up Are You Kidding Me is another in top form, with two victories prior to his recent second-place effort, while Grade 3 Arlington Washington Futurity winner Pataky Kid has experience over a similar Polytrack surface at Arlington Park that should serve him well in this situation. Java's War, like Balance the Books, recently won a race on grass, the Sunday Silence Stakes, and could be competitive in this feature, while Simcoe Stakes winner Dynamic Sky may only need to run as well in his first attempt around two-turns to have a say in the outcome
